HAZMAT

HazMat is an acronym for Hazardous Materials, which are goods that by their nature pose certain risks during transportation and usage. HazMat shipments are controlled by the regulations of governments according to the characteristics of the material, the mode of transport, the quantity and packaging. For international shipments, the regulations of several governments may apply. For shipments within the USA, the controlling regulations are under Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (CFR 49). For shipments originating in the USA for foreign destinations, other regulations in addition to CFR 49 apply, depending on the mode of transport. See particular requirements for air and sea on this site.

Since the consequences of not declaring or mishandling of HazMat can be quite serious, even life threatening, it is important that HazMat be identified and handled according to applicable regulations.
