AIR SHIPMENTS

Air shipments within the USA are controlled by CFR 49. International shipments are controlled under International Civil Aircraft Organization (ICAO) regulations, but more commonly IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations are used. Both are very similar to CFR 49, but are more restrictive where they differ. Both ICAO and IATA also contain certain variations by state (country) or operator (airline) that may limit how a shipment may be packed or if the shipment is acceptable by the country of destination, country of transfer, or by any given air carrier.

The regulations specify how shipments must be packed, marked and labeled, and how documentation must be prepared. For these reasons, we strongly suggest that shippers subscribe to the set(s) of regulations that apply to their shipments.
