House Waybills (Consolidated Shipment)

Hellmann offers shipment in consolidation, using the Hellmann Airwaybill (House Waybill) as the transport document. Using this method, Hellmann offices pickup shipments from exporters in their area, examine the packing and labeling, review the export documents, file the export documentation with US Customs, and issue a Hellmann House Waybill. Shipments are then sent to a regional export gateway, where they are sorted and consolidated by destination and then presented to an airline for carriage. Depending on the quantity, weight and volume for any given destination, shipments may be presented to the air carrier using a Unit Load Device (ULD), an aircraft pallet or container. ULDs permit mechanized handling from airline receiving warehouse all the way to airline or customs warehouse overseas. The airline waybill, or master airwaybill (MAWB) covering all of the house waybill shipments, is consigned from the Hellmann gateway office to the Hellmann office in the destination city. Upon receiving the package of documents from the airline, the destination office then notifies each individual house waybill consignee that the shipment has arrived, and either makes entry with customs or passes the documents on to the consignee or his designated broker.

Since Hellmann is purchasing space with the air carriers under contract rates, container rates, or at a lower rate due to higher weight of the MAWB, consolidated shipment can offer shippers cost savings while still maintaining a good service level. Dangerous Goods, perishables, and certain oversized or very high value goods cannot be included in consolidations as their properties might cause the consolidated shipment to be delayed to the detriment of all shipments. Since consolidations are planned and booked in advance, many with an allocation of reserved space, shipments may move when space in short supply. Service using consolidated shipment is directly related to the frequency and timing of consolidations. Since Hellmann has several weekly consolidations to most major destinations, including some every day, service is quite good. For less popular destinations, transit time is dependent on day of shipment versus consolidation days. Because Hellmann has an extensive worldwide network, consolidations are available to many destinations. Additionally, onforwarding of house waybill shipments is also available. Using this method, shipments are consigned from the US export gateway to a foreign gateway, who then onforward the shipment to the final destination, either in a consolidation or as individual shipments.

Direct Airline Shipments

Hellmann also ships directly with the airlines for shipments which by the nature of the goods, the destination, or service requirements may not be shipped on house waybills. Hellmann issues the airline waybill, consigned to the overseas customer or their broker. The airline waybill is the transport document, and subject to the terms and conditions of the airline used. Since Hellmann is one of the largest purchasers of air freight services worldwide, we are sometimes able to ship directly with the airlines and still offer a discounted rate from the published tariff, limited to prepaid shipments only.

Prepaid or Collect?

Hellmann can ship either prepaid or collect to most house waybill destinations. For direct airline shipments, collect shipment may not be allowed due to country or carrier regulations. It is best to check before making any commitment to the customer. We are also unable to ship C.O.D to international destinations on either house or direct shipments.
